Reading and Writing with English Learners: A Framework for K-5

February 23rd - March 30th, 2021

What is this class about?

Drawing from Valentina Gonzalez and Melinda Miller’s book, Reading & Writing with English Learners, this 5 week, online course offers educators a deep dive into supporting English learners in balanced literacy classrooms. Participants will engage in online asynchronous learning as well as implement strategies in their work with English learners either in virtual classrooms or in traditional classrooms.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn instructional techniques that support English learners through balanced literacy
  • Explore strategies that promote academic language for all students in reading and writing workshop
  • Incorporate listening, speaking, reading, and writing into reading and writing instruction
  • Learn practical ways to integrate language and content literacy

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes, upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate that you may submit to your district.

What do I need in order to participate?

Each participant needs a personal Google Account. 

Does anyone facilitate the course?

Yes, a Seidlitz Educational Consultant facilitates each course. The facilitator will be accessible to you and help to guide you along the coursework. 

About how much time will I need to dedicate to this course?

Most participants dedicate about 2 hours weekly to the course content, some a little less and others more. 

Are courses self-paced?

Somewhat. Courses have a designated beginning and ending date and are organized by weeks. It is recommended that participants stay on the weekly schedule in an effort to complete the course by the designated end date, and to effectively interact with other participants.

Do I need a substitute in order to participate?

No. You can decide the time of day that you participate in the course so it’s not necessary to take a day off. 

What if I’m unable to complete the course?

Refunds will be issued before the first day of the course for those that notify Kathy Belanger of their cancelation request in writing.
