Gifted Multilingual Learners: Answers for Educators
Who is the gifted multilingual learner? What are the characteristics of gifted multilingual children? How can teachers play a role in their identification? How can educators increase the rigor of instruction to address both the language and learning needs of not only the gifted multilingual learner, but all multilingual learners?
What is it?
This session will provide answers to these questions and more. A special emphasis will be placed on classroom instruction that encourages multilingual learners to exhibit in-depth, complex thinking while also increasing their achievement and proficiency in English. Participants will explore ways combine the thinking model of Depth and Complexity with Sheltered Instruction in classroom instruction. Examples of activities that structure classroom interaction for multilingual learners to use academic vocabulary to listen, speak, read, and write while at the same time think in in-depth, complex ways will be provided.
Participants will leave equipped to:
• Create activities that structure classroom interaction for multilingual learners to use academic vocabulary to listen, speak, read, and write while also thinking in more in-depth, complex waysÂ
• Identify gifted multilingual learners using a checklist of characteristicsÂ
• Advocate for the needs of gifted multilingual learners
