Moving English Learners Forward on the STAAR/EOC Writing

This workshop outlines simple steps that will make the essay writing portions of the STAAR and EOC assessment less threatening. Participants will explore approaches for secondary ESL and ELA teachers to scaffold instruction and to boost students’ performance on the writing portion of the STAAR and EOC. The workshop includes an opportunity to examine the required elements of the essays and learn how to help students incorporate these elements into their writing. As a culminating activity, we will dissect essays and analyze specific attributes that helped intermediate English learners earn the perfect score. 

Participants will receive a resource that includes items such as: 

• Sentence and paragraph building activities 
• Graphic organizers with sentence stems and paragraph frames 
• Color-coding and revision activities
