What it is:

This session will guide participants through strategies and practices which support and engage ELs with social studies content while also accelerating language acquisition. These strategies, which are accompanied by a differentiation guide for each language proficiency level, have been chosen specifically for their applicability to both in-person and online teaching formats as well as the benefits they offer to all learners. The companion book, Teaching Social Studies to ELLs, offers additional activities to help teachers meet the unique needs of their students during each component of a typical social studies lesson.

Who should attend:

  • teachers seeking high yield strategies for fostering language development
  • instructional leaders and curriculum designers seeking to embed authentic language opportunities in their own trainings
  • all educators seeking to increase their ability to differentiate lessons for various English proficiency levels
  • all educators seeking ideas for delivering engaging content in both online and in-person settings
