Navigating the ELPS: Using the New Standards to Improve Instruction for English Learner -
In 2006 the Texas Education Agency assembled a group to review and revise the ESL standards. The result was the new English Language Proficiency Standards that went into effect in December of 2007. The standards describe the instruction that districts need to provide for English language learners so that they can successfully master both content area knowledge and academic language. Unlike the former ESL standards, the new standards clearly indicate that the ELPS are to be integrated into each subject of the required curriculum. This training will provide teachers, administrators, and specialists an easy process for moving ahead with implementing the standards. Teachers will receive a copy of the book "Navigating the ELPS" which includes a brief introduction into what kind of instruction is required for English learners, an outline of district responsibilities, cross curricular student expectations, and language proficiency level descriptors.Sheltered Instruction Plus -
Teachers are looking for strategies that increase achievement for English learners in content area classrooms. This training focuses on research-based strategies that help students improve their comprehension and ability to communicate in academic English. The templates and resources will help teachers plan and implement a practical approach to instructing English language learners. Participants will receive the book "Sheltered Instruction Plus" that includes a wealth of strategies and techniques for integrating the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) to a sheltered approach.Seven Steps to Building a Language Rich Interactive Classroom -
As Educators we are always looking for ways to get students talking and thinking about what we are teaching. English learners pose particular challenges as we try to find ways for them to engage in the interactions necessary for them to become proficient in academic English. This session will walk teachers through a step by step process they can follow to build a language rich interactive classroom where all students can successfully engage in academic conversations. Participants will receive specific strategies for differentiating instruction during classroom discussions for students at various levels of language proficiency. If you are interested in booking a district training, please contact Kathy Belanger (949) 547-6664 or visit us at www.encompasseventplanners.com
